Some high school seniors just seem naturally comfortable in front of the lens for their senior portrait session. Grant is certainly one of those seniors! Our senior portrait session in Cary went great and he took direction well. Not that I was having him bust out the poses from top model or anything like that, but trust me, especially for high school senior boys, posing doesn’t always come natural! On second thought, even for grown men, we just don’t pose as well as women usually! Grant was so relaxed, I’m sure that helped to keep his senior portraits natural and coming out great!

During Daniel’s senior portrait session, we discovered that from Elementary School – High School, we had attended the same schools. Also, we both played a little baseball, and by little, I mean I was the worst kid on my kid pitch team and Daniel is an awesome pitcher for his school team! That is why for his senior portraits, we took a few on the baseball field and a senior portraits around campus. We had talked about wearing baseball gear on the field, but I really like the way the dressed up senior portraits on the baseball field came out. Luckily, we had great weather for Cary, North Carolina summer for his senior portrait session and were able to come away with some fantastic portraits!

For Devon’s senior portraits, his family had already scouted out the perfect location and had some great ideas about what they wanted. The location was great, very rustic with lots of texture but not distracting from the subject of the senior portraits! Of course it also helped that Devon was comfortable in front of the camera and open to all the ideas we were giving him. I usually don’t edit the color too much of the photos, but there is one senior portrait photograph that I put a little style on to match the rugged feel that was going on between the older barn and truck in the senior portrait. Blythe is the younger sister of one of my previous high school seniors so I was so happy the family came back to me again for another round of senior portraits! She and her family had picked out a fantastic location that matched her personality and had personal meaning to the family which helped to make some great senior portraits. Of course it helped that she was a natural in front of the camera and seemed to enjoy the senior portrait session. Despite a particularly hot day, the whole family came out for Matt’s senior portrait session in Cary. It was obvious from the beginning that sense of humor was a big part of family dynamics and I think it really helped to get some great senior portraits of Matt. We also were kept laughing during his senior portrait session, which is always a lot of fun! We even had time to take a a family photo or two at the end which is always nice to do before the high school seniors head off to university in who knows where!

High school senior portraits during the North Carolina Summer can be a little bit… hot. Luckily, for Alex’s senior portrait session in Cary, we had particularly mild weather for a Summer high school senior portrait session! He was even able to wear a long sleeve pullover for a few shots without melting away. He also had a button up shirt with a bow-tie he tied himself for his senior portraits. Good variety and choices for outfits plus the mild weather and confident personalty lead to some wonderful senior portraits!

Mainly because I remember my own awkwardness from in high school, I am always impressed when high school senior guys do a great job and look so comfortable in their senior portraits. Austin was certainly comfortable during his senior portrait session and naturally fell into poses for his senior portraits. We got a good mix formal senior portraits in the button up shirt and some casual portraits in the polo and even a few with the lacrosse stick. When I get questions about what outfits are best for senior portraits, and I get that question from parents of seniors a lot, the first of many bits of advice is to bring a variety with at least one outfit being as formal as your senior will feel comfortable in and one that is how the high school senior dresses normally… and then some in between! If you have questions about outfits and accessories for your own senior portraits, just ask me!

Even though Hunter attends one of my own arch rivals from my high school days when I was a senior (go Chargers!), I was still happy to take his senior portraits in Raleigh. I do have to admit though, I was glad he didn’t show up in a bunch of green and white! In all seriousness though, Hunter was very relaxed in front of the camera which really helped to make his senior portraits come out great. A lot of times I get asked where are the best locations for senior portraits and I certainly have my goto locations for senior sessions, but Hunter’s mom had a great idea to have his senior portraits made at some locations where she took him when he was much younger. Great idea for senior portraits as it adds even more personal meaning to the portraits of your high school senior!

I’ve always felt that Cary Academy is a great location to take high school senior portraits. The well kept grounds and impressive architecture gives a little bump to the classiness of the senior portraits! I was really happy that a lot of seniors in the 2014 class wanted to take their senior portraits there and Keegan was one of the first of many seniors this year to request it. While we had to wait a few minutes for the rain to stop, afterwards he had these cool clouds and soft light that I love for portraits. After just minutes into the senior session, he seemed comfortable in front of the camera and with all those factors coming together, we came away with great senior portraits!

We had a lot of fun during Carrie’s senior portrait session in Raleigh. She was really easy going which lead to comfortable and confident senior portraits. We also had nice weather and the location picked out for senior session was not crowded at all which always is a plus! Carrie also had some creative ideas and a good idea of what she wanted for her portraits, something not all seniors are prepared for.

For Matthew’s senior portrait session, we actually had a split session due to a yearbook deadline and an injury he experienced playing baseball. For the first session, we met at my studio and had a great time even though we had to try to hide one of his arms because of the injury. For the second session, we met at a park a few months later, and those images turned out great too, especially since all of the leaves were starting to change!
