The 2015 senior portrait class was filled with siblings from previous years of photographing high school seniors and Casey is included in that group! Casey’s older sister was one of the first high school seniors that trusted me to take her senior portraits! While I know it wasn’t Casey’s favorite thing to do, he did take some great senior portraits. He is a really good baseball player and I think the confidence from playing baseball shows through in his portraits! Not too long after taking his senior portraits, I saw Casey sporting an awesome mohawk and while I understand that mom probably wouldn’t have been too happy, part of me wished he had done so before the senior session! Of course I’m only half serious!!

Caroline is the younger sister of previous high school senior I took portraits of a few years back. When I took her brother’s senior portraits, he had an arm injury that led us to hide one of his arms for the entire senior session and then we had another senior portrait session in the Fall. For Caroline, we didn’t know at the time of the session, but it turns out she had a concussion not too long before her senior portraits and while mom knew she wasn’t 100%, didn’t know why! It wasn’t until afterwards we found out about the concussion, which makes her great senior portraits even more impressive! So, I think this family might want to not schedule portrait sessions with me too far in advance anymore, but we still had a great senior portrait session!

Bobby’s senior portrait session reminded me of my own senior portraits from a while back! I could tell that like me, taking portraits wasn’t exactly Bobby’s preferred activity of choice during his spare time, but he was happy to allow me to take some senior portraits to make mom happy! As you can see from the portraits, Bobby was natural in front the camera and not sure he would admit it, but seemed to have fun by the end of the senior portrait session!

Not only a double senior portrait blog post day, but a double Alex senior portrait post day! For those of you that have followed my blog for a few years now, perhaps remember a certain Wicked Bat Mizvah I photographed, where yes, Alex was the star of the celebration! It’s been a wonderful getting to know Alex and her family over the past few years and exciting to see her reach this next milestone!
Just like her bat mitzvah, Alex handled her senior portraits with ease, grace and enthusiasm! As to be expected, she was completely comfortable in front of the camera and we had a lot of fun during the senior portrait session in Cary! It’s been a pleasure watching Alex grow up and can’t wait to see what she does in the years to come. Hard to believe that another senior class will be graduating in a few weeks! I’m a little embarrassed that I haven’t posted sooner about the 2015 senior class of 2015, but the good news is that I’ve had a busy (good busy) year. Besides helping visitors and photographers on multiple trips to Japan, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, family celebrations, school and sports photography and so on, I’ve also started working for USA Today Sports Images. Overall a great year and ready to start taking senior portraits for the class of 2016!
Sorry to hijack Alex’s senior portrait post with the update, but knowing how easy going Alex is, I don’t think he will mind! Alex was really comfortable during his senior portrait session, which for guys, isn’t always the case! … Especially since Alex’s family came along so that we could take a few family portraits as well after we had enough senior portraits of him. It’s always fun to have extra friends and family come along for senior portrait sessions, and while Alex handled it great, but sometimes it can be a case of “too many cooks in the kitchen” with all the opinions going around!

Sometimes the stars just align perfectly, like with Jasmine’s senior portrait session in Raleigh. We had great weather, she picked awesome outfits for her senior session (along with matching accessories), the lighting was perfect for portraits, she was a natural in front of the camera and we had lot’s of helping hands to assist as both parents were able to come and assist with the senior portraits. I always recommend bringing at least one parent, not only can they help to carry some clothes/accessories if necessary, but it’s a lot of fun to see the portraits instantly on the iPad fro them as well. Not to mention, getting instant feedback from the high school seniors and their parents about what kind of portraits they like is extremely helpful as I am taking the portraits!

Some high school seniors just seem naturally comfortable in front of the lens for their senior portrait session. Grant is certainly one of those seniors! Our senior portrait session in Cary went great and he took direction well. Not that I was having him bust out the poses from top model or anything like that, but trust me, especially for high school senior boys, posing doesn’t always come natural! On second thought, even for grown men, we just don’t pose as well as women usually! Grant was so relaxed, I’m sure that helped to keep his senior portraits natural and coming out great!

During Daniel’s senior portrait session, we discovered that from Elementary School – High School, we had attended the same schools. Also, we both played a little baseball, and by little, I mean I was the worst kid on my kid pitch team and Daniel is an awesome pitcher for his school team! That is why for his senior portraits, we took a few on the baseball field and a senior portraits around campus. We had talked about wearing baseball gear on the field, but I really like the way the dressed up senior portraits on the baseball field came out. Luckily, we had great weather for Cary, North Carolina summer for his senior portrait session and were able to come away with some fantastic portraits!

For Sarah’s senior portrait session, she wanted to incorporate two of her favorite pastimes—playing soccer and playing her ukulele. To do so, we met at her school in Cary and shot a few traditional portraits in front of the beautiful buildings and a few more on the soccer field nearby. Then we moved to the incredible Umstead Hotel where we strolled along the path near the pond, took a few more portraits, and even got our own little ukulele show from her! She’s quite talented! For Rebecca’s portrait session, we met at a lovely little park in Cary and had such a great time! I set up the session as a way to train a new assistant, and Rebecca was the perfect model for the job. She was so laid back and up for anything—including several treks through brush and lying on the ground for unique shots. Check out the images from her portrait session below!

For Devon’s senior portraits, his family had already scouted out the perfect location and had some great ideas about what they wanted. The location was great, very rustic with lots of texture but not distracting from the subject of the senior portraits! Of course it also helped that Devon was comfortable in front of the camera and open to all the ideas we were giving him. I usually don’t edit the color too much of the photos, but there is one senior portrait photograph that I put a little style on to match the rugged feel that was going on between the older barn and truck in the senior portrait. Blythe is the younger sister of one of my previous high school seniors so I was so happy the family came back to me again for another round of senior portraits! She and her family had picked out a fantastic location that matched her personality and had personal meaning to the family which helped to make some great senior portraits. Of course it helped that she was a natural in front of the camera and seemed to enjoy the senior portrait session. Despite a particularly hot day, the whole family came out for Matt’s senior portrait session in Cary. It was obvious from the beginning that sense of humor was a big part of family dynamics and I think it really helped to get some great senior portraits of Matt. We also were kept laughing during his senior portrait session, which is always a lot of fun! We even had time to take a a family photo or two at the end which is always nice to do before the high school seniors head off to university in who knows where!
